At the outset, Contributors are asked to contact either of the Editors with an outline of the nature of the article together with approximate number of words, and pages of illustrations, for information of the Editorial Committee. The editor(s) will then confirm, or otherwise, that the paper is acceptable in principle.
Contributors are asked to look at our latest Transactions to see the current "house style". A copy will be sent on request. The following points should be noted.-

References may be either in footnote or Harvard style (or a mixture). Lengthy appendices or supplementary matter may have to be consigned to microfiche or the author asked to summarise these in print and deposit a full text in the National Monument Record or one of our local libraries or Archive Centre.

Our printed page is 12.5 cm wide by 19 cm high and all illustrations should be prepared so that they can be reduced in size by the printer, to fit the page, without loss of detail. Space should be allowed for the inclusion of captions. If pull-out folders are unavoidable they should be prepared so that the printed height will not be more than 19 cms.

Since line drawings and half tones are both printed with the text they should be called figures and numbered consecutively.

Contributions should be typed on one side of A4 paper in 12pt font, double spaced and with wide margins. If the manuscript has been prepared on a word processor a disc copy (preferably CD-ROM) should also be provided as this can considerably reduce typesetting costs. Discs should be clearly labelled with the title, contributor's name and the software type(s) (Word, being preferred for texts - but see also below for image formats).
Authors should be aware that most word-processor formatting is 'stripped out' of the files by the printer. The ones that reliably survive being italics, underline, bold, small capitals and superscript.

Offprints

10 offprints are provided gratis to the principal author, plus 6 filing copies to Historic Scotland, when the article is grant-aided by them. The Business Editor will quote for additional copies. In addition, or alternatively if requested copies of the published article(s) will be made available as Acrobat .pdf files - usually supplied electronically by e-mail but also possible on CD-ROM.

Artwork Specifications

The Printers are able to accept files of the following types.-
Photoshop CS2, InDesign CS2, Illustrator CS2, tiff, jpeg, eps and high resolution PDF.

Line Art must be 600-800 dpi and greyscale or colour images 300 dpi

Digital camera images should be taken at the highest resolution available on the camera and supplied as original camera format - it is recommended that down-sampling of the image should not take place.

All scanned images must be saved as tiff, jpeg or eps files.

Please do not supply any images as Word .doc files.

Timing

We collect material in the autumn, winter and spring and, in theory with the view to printing about September or October to coincide with the start of the society's winter session. However this is not absolutely fixed and suitable material should be passed to us as soon as it is prepared.

The Editors will be pleased to discuss any matters in detail.
