Hibs 1-0 Hearts, January 4 1989

Anyone for back to back victories against Hearts? Oh alright then, I'll have some of that. Young whippersnappers weaned on the regular superiority of Alex McLeish's side in derby encounters will need to be reminded that it was not always so.

Unfortunately my records only stretch to listing the Hearts team (from a later Tynecastle programme) and I'm not going to bother with that. The goalscorer was Eddie May, but at what point in the game I can't remember, so as usual any help appreciated. Hibs were in fifth place in the league, and angling for a UEFA cup place. The crowd for this match was an unusually precise 27,022.

Interesting bits from the programme included a reminder of Joe Baker's four goals against Hearts in a Scottish Cup tie on March 1 1958. That was the season Hearts won the league by 13 points. The crowd was 41,666 at Tynecastle and the final score was 4-2.

On the business side, Douglas Cromb joined the board this week, and a lengthy article outlined the splitting of Hibs into three companies, Hibernian Football Club, Hibernian Leisure, and Hibernian Land and Property, all under the umbrella of Edinburgh Hibernian plc. It all sounded terribly sensible, even the bit about all the club's land being placed under the ownership of Hibernian Land and Property. Only time would tell...
