these pages will remain on the web for a short while at http://users.quista.net/joe.serche/cfjc Thanks to everyone who has offered the campaign its support to date On the 4th November 1998 Surjit Singh Chhokar, a 32 year old Asian man, was brutally attacked and murdered on a public street by three white men. Three men were later arrested and charged with murder. Yet when the Chhokar family came to court they saw only one man stand trial. The family were given no explanation as to what was happening. With little understanding of English the family sat through a trial for a whole week. Despite the overwhelming evidence, the charge of murder was reduced to assault. Yet when the Jury found the accused guilty, the Crown never even asked for a sentence, and he walked free from the dock. It was later revealed that on his release the accused had boasted that he had "stabbed a black bastard and got away with the perfect murder". The police in fact dismissed racism as a motive only several hours after Surjit's death. The CFJC has called for a full independent Public Inquiry into the case, to include lay advisors who have the confidence of the Chhokar family. |
