1956 Scottish Cup First Round
Broxburn Athletic v Camelon Juniors

Camelon took an early lead in this game against the run of play. Broxburn Athletic remained patient and steadily got back into the game. The Athletic started to put more and more pressure on the Camelon team and created a number of good goal scoring chances. During one these early attacks Broxburn were awarded a free kick. Robertson flighted the free kick into the centre of the penalty box and Hamilton did well to head the ball into the net for a well deserved equalizer. Hughes, Fitzpatrick and Hamilton continued to create good attacking moves and Broxburn now looked the favourites to increase their goal tally. Broxburn did get the goal they deserved later in the first half when Craig scored from close in. Camelon did not lie down and they started to pick up the momentum. Camelon were beginning to get on top in the match and they got their reward when they scored their second goal to level the score again. In an exciting end to end match the Broxburn forwards increased their work rate and shortly before the interval Broxburn scored their third goal to regain the lead. This goal was a Fitzpatrick/Hamilton combination with Hamilton finishing the move off with a long distance shot.

The second half started with Broxburn on the attack and they had a number of narrow misses before Hughes scored to put the Athletic in a more comfortable position. Craig was the provider and Hughes powered the ball home with so much aggression that, after connecting with the ball, his momentum took him forward and he crashed against the post. He had to leave the park to receive treatment but returned after a few minutes, none the worse for wear. Camelon continued to show grit and determination and kept battling away at the Broxburn defence. A chink of light appeared for Camelon when they were awarded a penalty mid way through the second half. However, the light was quickly extinguished when Lucas pulled off a tremendous save to retain Broxburn's two goal advantage. The Athletic had weathered the storm and the win was sealed when McLean scored with a well hit shot to put the game well and truly out of Camelon's reach.

Scottish Cup Second Round
Broxburn Athletic v St. Andrews United

Broxburn got off to a great start and for most of the first half they pounded the Saint's defence with attack after attack. However, the Broxburn forward line was kept at bay and this was mainly due to a great performance by the Saint's keeper. Then, totally against the run of play St. Andrews break forward and score the first goal of the game. Broxburn hit back with an equalizer from Hughes after a good pass from Hamilton. Shortly afterwards Broxburn launched another attack and Hughes was brought down in the penalty as he raced towards goal. The penalty kick was given and the Broxburn centre half, Raeburn, struck the spot kick neatly past the Saint's keeper to go 2-1 ahead. St. Andrews United battled away and managed to get them back into the match by scoring a good goal to make the score 2-2. In a see-saw battle, where Broxburn Athletic did not appear to get many lucky breaks, the Broxburn forwards continued to play well and eventually they got their reward when Wishart scored to put the 'Burn' into a 3-2 lead.

In a quieter second half, Broxburn continued to hold the upper hand but found it very difficult to break down the Saint's defence to get that decisive goal which could seal the victory. In the last few minutes of the game Hughes managed to take the ball forward into a good position and he then slipped a good pass through to Hamilton who struck the ball into the ball into the back of the net for that decisive fourth goal.

Scottish Cup Third Round
Broxburn Athletic v Kilsyth Rangers

Broxburn Athletic created plenty chances in the first half. They came close on a number of occasions but could not put the ball away. All three Broxburn forwards Brownlee, Irving and Hughes were busy during this spell and causing the Rangers defence plenty of problems. The goal eventually came late in the first half. The goal was scored by Irving and the provider was Hamilton.

Kilsyth Rangers scored first in the second half to level the score. Brownlee scored for Broxburn Athletic to put them back into the lead by 2 goals to one. This time the goal was scored by Brownlee and the provider was Hughes. The game was put beyond the reach of Kilsyth Rangers when Brownlee scored again late in the second half to make the score 3-1 to Broxburn.

Scottish Cup Fourth Round
Auchterarder Primrose v Broxburn Athletic

This game was played early in 1956 and a large crowd left the small town of Broxburn to watch the Athletic easily beat Auchterarder Primrose. The Broxburn Athletic team played really well that day and never looked like losing the game. Up front, Brownlee, Hughes and Fitzpatrick were in top form and did not give the Primrose defence a chance to settle into a rhythm. The first goal was scored by Brownlee approximately mid way through the first half. The goal was set up by the inside forward, Hughes, who put a nice pass through to Brownlee and the striker finished neatly to put Broxburn Athletic ahead. The Burn increased their lead before half time and the same two forwards were involved, Brownlee and Hughes. This time Brownlee sent a strong shot in on target and the keeper pulled off a good save but could only parry the ball out towards the onrushing Hughes. Hughes blasted the rebound into the back of the net, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

Hughes score his second goal early in the second half. He received a pass from Irving, made a strong run forward and then hit a very well hit shot into the corner of the net. Hughes almost score his hat trick a short time later when he hit another good shot on target. The fourth goal for the Athletic was scored by the other half of the goal scoring duo, Brownlee. This time he was set up by Hamilton who provided a good pass and Brownlee finished efficiently to make the score 4-0 to Broxburn. Hughes did manage to finish off a good day's work by scoring his hat trick when he scored Broxburn Athletic's fifth goal. This was regarded as the best goal of the game. Hughes caught the ball sweetly and raised the back of the net from over 20 yards out. The large Broxburn support enjoyed their away day and started to wonder if 1956 would be Broxburn's year.

Scottish Cup Fifth Round
Coupar Angus v Broxburn Athletic 3

Broxburn Athletic took the lead early in the game when Brownlee started the move and then he set up Craig with a good pass who then slotted the ball neatly past the keeper. Broxburn Athletic scored their second goal when Fitzpatrick put in a good cross from a corner and Hughes timed his jump perfectly to head the ball past the Coupar Angus keeper. The third Broxburn goal came when Fitzpatrick was tripped in the box for a penalty. Fitzpatrick took the penalty himself and hammered the ball into the net to make the score Coupar Angus 0 Broxburn Athletic 3.

The second half was not long started when Coupar Angus managed to get a goal back to make the score Coupar Angus 1 Broxburn Athletic 3. Broxburn did not let this setback affect their confidence and they secured the win shortly afterwards when Brownlee scored a first class goal to make it four for the 'Burn'. Hughes then scored his second and Broxburn's fifth goal to set the West Lothian side up for a comfortable victory. A great day for the 'away' Broxburn fans was guaranteed when Craig scored the sixth goal for Broxburn Athletic. Coupar Angus scored a consolation goal to make the final score Coupar Angus 2 Broxburn Athletic 6

A large crowd of well over 20,000 watched this Scottish Cup semi final which was played at Firhill Park.

Broxburn had the early pressure in this match. Hughes, playing at inside forward, had a half chance in the first few minutes but the Lugar boswell goalkeeper made a good save. However, this only delayed the inevitable and within the first 10 minutes Hughes got the first of his two goals to put the Athletic 1-0 ahead. Fitzpatrick provided the pass and Hughes had the speed to get ahead of the defenders and hammer the ball into the back of the net.

Lugar equalized mid-way through the first half to get themselves back into the game. Broxburn created a scoring chance through Irving and were unlucky not to go ahead. However, towards the end of the first half Broxburn were getting back on top again and Hughes scored his second goal to put the Athletic ahead by two goals to one.

At half time Broxburn Athletic looked the favourites to get the win and move into the Scottish Cup Final for the first time in their history. However, Lugar Boswell showed enormous determination in the second half and they pinned the Athletic team back into their own half of the field for most of the rest of the game. This pressure paid off and Lugar managed to score the two goals they needed to win the game and earn the right to play in the 1956 Scottish Cup Final.
