Representatives from GMPTE visited the crime prevention volunteers and were present at a number of their committee meetings. Later that year services started to operate out of Manchester City centre as an experimental scheme.
These services are still running and operate on a well used basis. There was little support for services to operate the other way though (out of Altrincham).
The Crime Prevention Committee also consists of representative from the Police both from uniform and crime reduction. They were in support of the service as it would help prevent the possibility of vandalism by revellers unable to be efficiently transported away on their way home. The Council was also represented both at area services level and on community safety generally.
The project gathered momentum through the Police to inspector level and to the Head of Area Services for the council. A meeting was called at Trafford Town Hall for the 10th July 2002. In attendance were Sonia Cubrilo (Head of Altrincham Area Services for TMBC), Steve Wurr (GMPTE), Peter Noble (Crime Prevention Committee) and Inspector Graeme Openshawe.
Further meetings saw the welcome addition of Cllr.Roland Griffin (TMBC representative to the GMPTA). The major breakthrough was the grant of £10,000 of Police funding this was further enhanced by matched funding from GMPTA. The transport authority was now able to put two bus routes out to the companies on a tender basis
On
the 25th July 2003 the service commences. Posters go up around the town
and promo cards are distributed to the pubs and clubs. The two successful
tender companies are UK North Ltd. and Finglands Ltd. Uk North would run
the service 11 and Finglands the 19. There would be a fixed fare of £2:50
per person for any distance.
To improve
the profile of the service the buses were to stand side by side at the
exit of the bus station. The Police would be in attendance with usually
two vehicles. Now with all lights on, the powerful street lighting and
the Interchange CCTV system operational, the area safety (including the
taxi rank) is increased a hundred fold.
At
2:30am both buses leave the interchange together. The service 11 is to
Gatley. The route takes in the length of Stockport Road to Timperley then
Thorley Lane, Shaftesbury Avenue to Baguley and finally through Wythenshawe.
The service 19 is to Sale moor via Barrington Road, Manchester Road, The
Sale West Estate, Ashton on Mersey and Sale town centre.
SUMMER
SALE the fare for the summer is reduced to JUST £1:50
per journey! From the 25th of July until 6th September this great late
service just got better. The town is safer. The Taxi Drivers Association
report no trouble in the time the buses have been running and more taxi
drivers have been tempted into working the town centre. There has also
been no trouble on the buses themselves.
Altogether a massive success for the centre of Altrincham and its nightlife.
